Making a big statement about drug awareness

Event By: Team Up 4 Community

Event Type: Children & Youth

Sport: Schools

Date: November 1, 2016

Location:
9 Union Avenue Lynbrook
New York 11563, United States

About:

To mark the beginning of Red Ribbon Week, students at Lynbrook’s West End School said no to drugs in a big way. Dressed in red, the entire school joined in solidarity on the field to form a giant red ribbon, unfurling a huge banner that read, “YOLO, Be Drug Free, #youonlyliveonce.”

Their commitment to healthy living did not end with these symbolic gestures. Throughout the week, students learned about making healthy choices and resisting peer pressure, and discussed the dangers of drug use and abuse. They also signed a pledge promising to always respect themselves and stay drug-free.

“It is our goal that long after Red Ribbon Week is over, students will continue to spread the word to family and friends about the importance of being healthy and drug-free” said school social worker Sandra Gettenberg. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of young people during Red Ribbon Week, which takes place each year in October. Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
